WHY IS SO HYPE REGARDING NIRBHAYA’S DOCUMENTARY?
The recent made BBC Documentary,
after the Nirbhaya’s rape case created so many buzzes in the country.
Everywhere, from television to social networking sites are filled with talks regarding this
documented film by Leslee Udwin. According to reports, Government under the UPA
rule had given the rights to BBC for the documentation of this film. BBC had
also sought the permission from the officials of Tihar Jail, in order to take
the interview of Ram Singh, one of the accused in Nirbhaya Rape case. This film
is now ready, but the controversy over this film’s screening has now been
floated on the top. Apparently, this documentary has few things which are
controversial which has raised the demand to stop this film’s screeing.Going by
the reports; this film has tried to showcase the point of view of the rapists
that have presented their perspective in this film. There are some
controversial statements, like Ram Singh telling the interviewee that a victim
should let herself to the mercy of the accused. Also, he said that government
should not let him hanged; as if they do then no other rapists might leave
other victims to survive. They just simply are going to kill them as it raises
the fear of them getting caught. This is good that the nation has been awaked
by the Nirbhaya’s case. But, what happened after this incicident? Is the rape
cases are getting checked? The facts are telling otherwise.
The recent incident of Badayun and
the Muzaffarnagar gang rape case are some of the examples of non implementation
of law. According to National Crime Records Bureau, the 2012 annual report of
rape cases recorded in India was 24,293 while Delhi alone had the figure of
700.Delhi,where Nirbhaya case happened, in 2013 recorded 1,121 number of rape
cases which was the highest data in last 13 years. All these data shows that
even after so many protests in Delhi regarding Nirbhaya rape case, these
incidents have increased tremendously in the country. In Delhi alone, the
figure has reached to almost double which needs to be concerned.
In States like Rajasthan, Uttar
Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and West Bengal, Rape incidents have projected a
highest peak. Rape cases in these prescribed states increased very fast. Madhya
Pradesh recorded highest number of rape cases so far with 3,425. If you see the
major cities in India, Delhi records highest number of Rape incident followed
by Mumbai.
So these things are showing that we
need to think broadly while taking larger picture in mind. Only, strengthen our
laws and banning picture is mere not enough to correct such things. We need to
think at broad level; only then our problem will be over. Our society is much
cruel as these rapists are. It has now become necessity to have clear
perspective about the issue. There are crimes happening against women in almost
every household. About 90 percent of such incidents are generated inside one’s
own family.
Our society which has been grown as
male dominated is creating problems for the safety of women. Our male society
developed a habit of overpowering the females of the country which is bad. In our homes, we treat our sisters as if they
are minor, which is just demeaning for those who are talking just taking a
single perspective of rape incidents. Even at the workplace, we try to
marginalise our women which are bad. So, that’s mentality needs to be changed
before we start blaming others.
Moreover, the flaw in our judicial
system also tends to guard those involved in crime and thus creating problem
for our society. There are rapists who got bail easily without getting charged
and there are ministers charged with rape in our parliament shouting against
each other. So, that thing needs to be changed. There is a requirement to
strengthen our judicial system, so that these rapists couldn’t able to get free
easily.
Also, these ministers inside the
parliament, they have been voted by us and they are among us. So, until and unless
our decision making gets stronger we can’t able to improve. So, regarding the
hype about India’s daughter screening, there is no point in banning this film.
As, this is just a perspective, we can’t say it tends to create an issue. Moreover,
everyone has right to present its own views. So, if Ram Singh presented his own
view then it is no wrong thing .This freedom, they enjoy under article 19(1)
(a) of freedom of speech and expression. So, in my view that documentary should
have screened and there are other things which need to be taken care off.
